LUNDGREN WINS CAPE MAY, SOMERSET, and KINGWOOD TIME TRIALS

Kenneth Lundgren of the Northeastern Hardware Cycling Team won the Cape May Time Trial, winning the Pro/1/2/3 category by a close 6 seconds over David Freifelder of Trade Manage Racing. Roy Vaccaro of Jimenez Velo Sport took 4th in the Cat-4s and is now 3rd overall in the Cat-4 TT Cup.

Two weeks later, Lundgren won the Somerset Circuit Time Trial, which is a 10-mile hilly, technical, and demanding course. Steve Tinston of Westwood Velo took 3rd in the 55+, Nick David of Propeller Racing, coming back from a lay-off, took 10th in a huge Cat-4 field.

Last week, Lundgren won the Kingwood 36k TT by a solid 90 seconds over 2nd place. Lundgren’s goals this year are to peak for the Killington Stage Race (which has a longer time trial), and then the NJ State TT Championships. This year, Lundgren attributes his success to following a periodized training program, using a power meter, riding PowerCranks, and eating according to the Paleo Diet.

WARNER 2nd at DEEP BLUE TIME TRIAL

Peter Warner of the Whole Wheel Velo Club placed 2nd at the Deep Blue Time Trial in Delaware, which also serves as the Delaware State TT Championships. Pete recently put his TT bike together again, with aims of doing well at the Church Creek 40k TT in early June, and then rocking the two TTs in the Tour of Washington County stage race.

At Deep Blue, Pete actually didn’t have a great day power-wise, but he dug deep and still managed to score a solid 2nd place!!! Look for Pete to get dialed in on that bike and really score some TT results this summer!!!   You can read about Pete’s training and racing exploits at http://www.pwarner1.blogspot.com/.

WINBERRY, PRO MOUNTAIN BIKER: UPDATE FROM BEND, OREGON!!!!

One of Elite Endurance’s most successful athletes, Laura Winberry from Team Campmor, recently moved out to Bend, Oregon… She achieved one of her huge goals, and that was earning enough upgrade points to obtain a professional racing license -- now she has three big sponsors and is living the dream...

With regards to competing, we really held her back… She raced last spring in Ecuador, then did a full summer MTB schedule, then scorched the cross season last year, and this year we REALLY took things slower and steadier, giving her a full block of Foundation work… She recently began racing again and here are some of her updates!

WINBERRY 7th at BEAR SPRING TRAP, HER FIRST PRO MTB RACE!

Bear Spring Trap was over 3h long, a new distance for Laura, but she noted she felt physically and mentally STELLAR. On the fire roads and climbs, she felt very strong. On the technical parts and descents, she was able to steadily push herself. The race had a fast start up a paved climb and Laura hung with stayed with Lizzy English (Adam Craig’s girlfriend) for about a half hour before she was dropped… But Laura felt SUPER on the course as she tried to maintain her place in the strung-out field… About 2.5h in her energy level began to wane, and she noted she left her endurolyte pills in the car – and she started to cramp, which has never happened before… In the last quarter of the race, Laura lost a lot of time. She was passed by a few women on a steep singletrack climb near the end...   But Laura rode very well. Alice Pennington won, Lizzy English 2nd, Serena Bishop 3rd, and Laura finished 7th… Not too shabby for her first pro event EVER!!!

WINBERRY TAKES 11th at CASCADE CHAINBREAKER

Laura had a flat day here and finished 11th overall, still a solid result in a big field. She noted on the climbs she felt like she had zero power. She nailed the fueling this time, using Heed and Perpetuem, having seamless energy during the event… FAST start up a gravel climb, and she was hurting. She noted the group kicked up an awesome cloud of dust as they roared through the woods…

The race was very different than Bear Spring Trap – this was FAST, dusty singletrack and fire roads. On the technical sections and descents, Laura was on her “A” game and felt amazing. Post-race, Laura noted all the racers were hacking up lungs from all the dust… In the end, Laura was happy to take 11th on an off day and finish closer to the leader than she did on her first race…

WINBERRY, ASHLAND KENDA CUP RACE

Here is Laura’s race diary from the Ashland Kenda Cup Pro Race:

“Although I was still behind, I had my first pro podium today, and at a Kenda Cup event, too. SWEET. The first climb was 1.5h long. The top section was a false flat with smaller inclines thrown in (for 12 miles, the course was basically a road race, drafting and all) and I ended up latching on to a few men who were passing. I told myself that if I work really hard now that it would pay off, which it did. Draft, pull, draft, pull... and then the 20m descent. Sweet release. After finishing, the tall man I had been working back and forth with came over to shake my hand. Turns out he is the organizer of Mudslinger Events out here and he offered me half price entry fee into the Test of Endurance 50 miler on June 20th.”
