WINS WINS WINS! WARNER SLAYS JEFFERSON CUP, ERICKSON AND DAVID TOPS IN CENTRAL PARK
4/24/2010
WARNER WINS EPIC JEFFERSON CUP IN EPIC FASHION!
Race day saw nasty conditions: cold temps and misting rain Jefferson Cup is the equivalent of Battenkill-Roubaix, one of the biggest, most important monuments on the calendar, full of dirt roads and climbs… Peter Warner of the Whole Wheel Velo Club sat in for the first half of the race… NOBODY wanted to work so he remained “invisible…” Pete then tried a few attacks in the second half of the race, but either guys wouldn’t work or he’d get caught…
Then one rider took a flier, and Pete hit it HARD coming out of a turn and bridged up fast, provided the horsepower for the duo to stay away. This was the move, as 3-4 others slowly bridged the gap. Pete did the right thing: as the strongman in the group, he did what was necessary to keep them away, drilling the flats and the descents, keeping the speeds high. The rains were heavier now and the temps were dropping, but Pete felt GREAT. Pete waited for the 200m and launched his sprint and won handily.
Peter Warner, 1st place at Jefferson Cup it doesn’t get any better than that!!!
DAVID WINS CENTRAL PARK!!!!
In Central Park, the Cat-5s went off with the Master’s, so it was a huge 100+ peloton The whistle blew and the group took off, riders all spread out across the road… Nick David of Propeller Racing did an excellent job staying up front. Nick avoided a few near pile-ups and maintained cool nerves going into the final lap. Nick made sure to stay seated up Harlem Hill as other stood and accelerated and wasted energy. A breakaway went after the climb, and Nick bridged to it fast, the race on his wheel. Then they hit another roller and Nick was suffering dearly, wishing he hadn’t pulled that break back so quickly (and by himself). Nick lost his positioning but was able to sneak behind a few surging riders and get a free pull to the front…
Going into the final Cat’s Paw sprint, Nick did a great job of waiting. He was about 10th. He let everyone ahead sprint, and Nick just followed, patient. Wait. Wait. Wait. With the line in sight, Nick jammed 100%, able to accelerate when others were maxed out, and roared to the line to take the victory!!!! HUGE victory, Nick!!!! Way to be smart out there…
ERICKSON WINS CENTRAL PARK!
Shawn Erickson of Tenafly Bike Worskhop WON the Cat-5 race at Central Park today. The field was huge, 100+, and the race was fast, 25+ mph… During the first lap, Shawn was stuck in the middle of the strung-out peloton, pissed and frustrated. Thinking, watching, worrying. On a positive side, he was not spending much energy.
On the second lap, he grew some courage and entered the game. He knew he needed to get to the front. On the south end of the park, he started to cut up along the outside. By the third time they reached Harlem Hill, Shawn was near the front, actually able to smash it on the climb a bit and open things up… 6-7 stronger riders came out of the woodwork and they drilled it to the line…
Going into the final sprint, Shawn, in hindsight, went too early, but when you’re confident you’re the strongest guy in the race, you can do these over-the-top things and get away with it! Channeling VDB and feeling strong, Shawn lead the sprint out at the bottom of the hill and was able to drop them all. What a win!!! Shawn wrote: “Relief, satisfaction, validation, reward, gratitude...”
Exactly.
