CORONEL 3rd, 10th at BETHEL HAVEMEYER 9th at BETHEL, 3rd at Prospect!

Bladdy Coronel of Westwood Velo takes two top-10s at Bethel, a 10th and a 3rd! NICE, Bladdy! In the last race, he knew that breakaways rarely stick on that course, and he had no teammates, so he had to race smart. He marked the leader's jersey, and in the end the leader's jersey had a vicious leadout and Bladdy was able to use his sprinting strength to power to win the sprint (two guys had slipped up the road near end). Bladdy's taking aim at a few of the early TTs, then taking a stab at Battenkill- Roubaix, and his numbers have been coming around nicely...

Rob Havemeyer of Kreb's Cycle has been enjoying some early season form, too. He also took a top-10 at Bethel, followed by a 3rd place at this weekend's Prospect Park event, NOT an easy place to score a result... Rob and his teammate Dave Kim attacked the race relentlessly, and Rob even went off the front with a few others on the fourth lap, but the guys didn't want to work with him... Rob was on a super day, recovering quickly, darting easily through the peloton, and he was able to take 3rd in the sprint! Well done, Rob...

ALDEN: TWO RACES, TWO TOP-5s, PREPPING FOR EPIC BATTENKILL

Mark Alden of the Blue Ribbon Cycling Team is prepping for the Tour of the Battenkill and has showcased strong legs in the NYC races... During the Spring Series race on 3/15 in Central Park, Mark launched attack after attack, but nothing was sticking. Mark wasn't well-placed going into the sprint but hauled out into the wind and was able to nab 5th, the last money spot! Good training, Mark.

Then a week later Mark and his team tried the same thing, attacking and attacking some more. Again, it came to a field sprint, and Mark, who is known as one of the area's top climbers, was able to take 3rd. Not bad -- two races, two payouts. But more importantly he was using his racing time wisely -- right now for him, it's key to empty it during these races. Don't just sit in, try one or two things, wait for the finish. Make your time out there worthwhile!

TIP OF THE MONTH: FUELING DURING YOUR EVENT

Some races are crazy, fast, and treacherous, hard to maneuver in the peloton, twisty roads, lots of climbing. With experience, you’ll learn to overcome these hurdles and continue to stay topped-up while racing. Do a reconnaissance of the course and look to see where you can eat half a bar or down a GU. A tip for drinking? ALWAYS be taking sips. Once you’re thirsty, it’s too late. If it’s hot, look to bring more fluids than you usually do because you’re going to need them!

Some riders only begin to eat and hydrate an hour, two hours into a race, and this is a mistake. You’re eating and drinking before the race, so there is no reason to stop once you’ve started racing. Eat bars first because as you get more tired, your digestive system becomes less efficient at breaking good down. Bars first, then GUs or flasks Success in cycling is about doing all the little things correctly. The difference between winning and losing in a lot of cases is very, very small. So take advantage of all the aspects of the sport that you can control.

WHITAKER ON TRACK FOR SUCCESSFUL SPRING

Mike Whitaker of Spinners Cycling, last year’s winner of the Cat-3 PA Bar series, has followed his training to a T this year and seems on track to have a huge April and May -- he wants to race a slew of events in this 7-week period, and we're doing everything we can to ensure he's coming with all 12 cylinders firing.

Mike recently scored a solid 3rd at the New Holland Criterium. Mike made the early break, then proceeded to lap the field. There was a vicious sprinter in the group, and Mike kept attacking to get away or weaken him, but he couldn't drop him. Mike, who's strength is road racing and time trialing, was able to summon a strong enough sprint for 3rd place. But he was there for the training and was taking longer pulls, really drilling it... Everything is coming together just as it should...
